Our Story

About Us

We're a small breeding program in San Diego, California — raising Mini Goldens with purpose, patience, and a whole lot of love.

The Red Valley family with their golden retrievers

It Started with One Dog and a Whole Lot of Love

At Red Valley Retrievers, our love for Golden Retrievers has always been at the heart of everything we do. What began as a passion for responsibly raising exceptional AKC Golden Retrievers quickly grew into something far bigger than we ever imagined. Over the years, we've been incredibly blessed to build a program surrounded by amazing families, lifelong friendships, and a constant waitlist of people hoping to bring one of our puppies home.

So naturally, when people first heard we were beginning a Mini Golden program, the biggest question was… why? The answer is actually pretty simple. We weren't looking to replace the Golden Retriever. We were looking for a way to preserve everything people love most about them in a size that better fits some families' lifestyles.

For years, we had families reach out who adored the temperament, loyalty, intelligence, and affectionate nature of a Golden Retriever, but realistically needed a smaller companion due to travel, housing limitations, physical ability, or simply wanting a dog that was easier to manage in size while still feeling unmistakably "Golden" in personality.

Instead of ignoring those families or jumping into breeding trends without purpose, we spent years quietly researching, learning, planning, and carefully building a program we could feel genuinely proud of.

Our Mini Goldens are intentionally bred from two breeds we deeply love and respect: the Golden Retriever and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The goal was never just "small and cute." Our focus has always been temperament first — to preserve the joyful, people-loving, emotionally intuitive nature that makes Golden Retrievers such extraordinary family dogs, while thoughtfully introducing the smaller size and companion-oriented traits of the Cavalier.

This journey has required patience, mentorship, education, health testing, and a tremendous amount of intentionality behind the scenes. We know mixed breeds can sometimes be misunderstood, especially when done irresponsibly or without purpose. That's exactly why we've approached this program so carefully and transparently from the very beginning.

Our Mini Goldens are not marketed as "rare," "exclusive," or as a replacement for purebred Goldens. They are simply a thoughtfully developed companion dog for families who love the heart of a Golden Retriever but are hoping for a smaller version better suited to their home or lifestyle.

One of the things we love most about this pairing is that smaller dogs often have the potential for longer lifespans, meaning families may get even more years of love, adventure, and companionship with their dog. And while every dog is an individual, our goal remains the same as it always has been: to produce healthy, stable, affectionate puppies with wonderful temperaments and strong foundations for family life.

At the end of the day, our AKC Golden Retriever program will always be a huge part of who we are. The Mini Golden program simply grew from that same passion, experience, and love for raising exceptional dogs that enrich people's lives in meaningful ways.

We're incredibly excited for this next chapter and so grateful to have families following along as we continue growing something truly special.

Careful Matching

We take time to know every family on our waitlist. The right match matters more to us than filling spots quickly.
